Waiheke Island, the largest of the group of islands lying to the east of Auckland City, is 12 miles long from east to west, and in width varies from 2/5 mile to 6 miles. The family resisted, but agreed to designate it a private scenic reserve in 1953, to be managed by a private trust that today remains in the hands of the three Buttle brothers.
